Punjab, known for its vibrant culture, warm-hearted people, and strong agricultural roots, has seen a steady rise in youth moving to other parts of India and abroad for education and employment. Countries such as Canada, Australia, the UK, the USA, Europe, and the Gulf have become popular destinations, offering new opportunities and experiences.
While this global movement brings financial benefits to Punjab through remittances and investments, it also creates noticeable changes in the state’s social structure, cultural life, and demographic balance. As more young people choose to settle permanently abroad, concerns about Punjab’s long-term cultural and economic landscape are growing.
The National Round Table Conference on “Changing Scenario of Punjab Due to Emigration: Socio-Economic and Cultural Perspectives” has been organized to study these shifts with clarity and depth.
The conference brings together policymakers, academicians, industry leaders, civil society organisations, and youth groups to understand the major drivers of emigration and the impact it has on Punjab’s development. It also acknowledges the historical context of how Punjabis, from colonial times to the present, have moved across continents while maintaining deep emotional ties with their homeland.
By facilitating diverse perspectives, the conference aims to build a clear and comprehensive understanding of the state’s changing migration landscape.
Through focused discussions and research-based insights, the conference seeks to develop practical recommendations to address the challenges arising from large-scale emigration. It will explore measures to strengthen local opportunities, encourage cultural preservation, and guide policy responses to demographic and economic changes.
The objective is to support Punjab in charting a future where global aspirations of its youth can continue, while the state’s social harmony, cultural strength, and economic vitality remain secure. In addition, the conference aims to propose clear policy pathways that can help Punjab build a long-term, sustainable framework for managing migration and strengthening state development.
To understand the key drivers of youth emigration by examining economic, educational, and social factors influencing migration from Punjab.
To assess the socio-economic and cultural impact of large-scale emigration on Punjab’s economy, rural communities, and cultural identity.
To analyse emerging challenges related to demographic shifts, social disintegration, agrarian distress, and long-term state stability.
To develop actionable policy recommendations through dialogue among experts, stakeholders, and institutions for addressing the consequences of emigration.
